Thailand Tightens Entry Rules: What Travelers Need to Know in 2025

Thailand has implemented new entry requirements that apply to all international visitors

Including those arriving under visa-free or visa-on-arrival (VOA) programs. As part of these updates, travelers must now complete a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before entering the country. Additionally, immigration officers may request proof of financial means, and failure to comply could result in denied entry.

Visa-Free Stay Duration May Be Reduced

In response to increasing cases of immigration violations, Thai authorities are considering reducing the visa-free stay period from 60 to 30 days for certain nationalities. While this change is not yet official, travelers should stay informed and prepare accordingly.

Why Thailand Reinstated Financial Proof Requirements

The financial documentation requirement was initially suspended in late 2023 to boost tourism post-COVID-19. However, with visitor numbers rising and cases of visa misuse increasing, the Thai government has reintroduced the policy to strengthen immigration controls.

According to Thailand’s official e-visa portal, all travelers, regardless of nationality or visa type, must show proof of financial means amounting to at least THB 20,000 per person (approximately USD 545 or HKD 4,721).

Acceptable Forms of Financial Proof

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau accepts the following documents:

  • Recent bank statements (issued within the past 3 months) showing sufficient funds

  • Sponsorship letters, if the trip is being funded by someone else

  • Income statements, payroll slips, or similar documents (subject to approval)

Documents should be official, printed on letterhead, and ideally translated into English or Thai. Hard copies are strongly recommended, even for travelers using the e-visa system.

TDAC: Thailand’s New Digital Arrival System

The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) has replaced the traditional TM6 paper form. This online pre-arrival form must be completed at least 72 hours before travel and includes:

  • Passport information

  • Flight and travel itinerary

  • Accommodation details

  • Emergency contacts and health declarations

Once submitted, travelers receive a QR code to present at immigration. Failure to complete TDAC may lead to delays or denied entry.

Visa-Free and VOA Travelers Must Comply

Thailand has visa-free agreements with 93 countries, allowing many visitors to enter for tourism without prior visas. However, all travelers, including those under VOA and visa-exempt schemes, are required to present financial documentation.

The government has emphasized that entry is not guaranteed, even for visa-exempt nationals, if the traveler fails to meet these new conditions.

Possible Policy Change: Shorter Visa-Free Stays

Immigration authorities have expressed concerns over “border hopping,” where travelers exit and re-enter Thailand to extend their stay. To address this, the government is reviewing the visa-free policy, and a 30-day limit may replace the current 60-day allowance for some countries. This change, if approved, could take effect later in 2025.

2025 Tourist Visa Requirements

For those applying for a standard single-entry tourist visa (60-day stay), the following documents are required:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months

  • Two passport photos (white background)

  • Round-trip flight confirmation

  • Proof of residence in the country of application

  • Hotel bookings or accommodation details

  • Proof of financial means as outlined

Applications should be made through Thailand’s official e-visa platform to avoid scams and unauthorized intermediaries.

Travel Tips for a Smooth Entry

To ensure a hassle-free trip to Thailand:

  • Prepare all documents in advance (digital and printed versions)

  • Avoid frequent border runs, which can raise suspicion

  • Check with Thai embassies or consulates for country-specific visa rules

  • Monitor official government updates on entry policies

Thailand’s revised entry requirements aim to balance tourism promotion with immigration integrity. While travelers face stricter rules, those who plan ahead—especially by ensuring financial documentation and TDAC completion—can expect a smooth arrival and a rewarding experience in the Land of Smiles.
