Marriott’s Moxy Hotel at Costa Rica’s Main Airport Advances Toward 2027 Opening

Construction is progressing on the new Moxy by Marriott at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), a landmark US$20 million investment that will introduce a new level of convenience for travelers visiting Costa Rica. The 173-room hotel is expected to open in mid-2027 and will become the first airport hotel in Central America with a direct pedestrian connection to an airport terminal.

Strategically located across from the airport in Alajuela, the approximately 6,500-square-meter (70,000-square-foot) property will be linked to the terminal by an enclosed pedestrian bridge, allowing guests to walk directly from the hotel to the departure area in just minutes.

One of the hotel’s most innovative features will be the integration of official airport check-in facilities. Guests will be able to complete airline check-in and print baggage tags from within the hotel before crossing the bridge to the terminal, creating a smoother travel experience for passengers with early morning flights, long layovers, or unexpected flight delays. The concept is also expected to be highly attractive to airline crews and frequent business travelers.

Designed to reflect the energetic and contemporary spirit of the Moxy brand, the hotel will offer a vibrant social atmosphere with modern amenities. Instead of a traditional reception desk, guests will check in at the hotel’s signature bar, while the public spaces will feature coworking areas, lounges, a library, entertainment zones, grab-and-go dining options, a 24-hour restaurant, meeting rooms, and a fully equipped fitness center.

The development is led by Expandd Development and managed by AZ Hospitality Group, with architectural design by Saballos Arquitectos and hotel operations by Remington Hospitality under Marriott International’s globally recognized Moxy brand. The project is being developed in partnership with Aeris, the operator of Juan Santamaría International Airport and a member of Grupo CCR.

Beyond providing convenient accommodations, the new Moxy represents an important milestone in the modernization of Costa Rica’s principal international gateway. Airport officials view the project as part of a broader strategy to enhance the passenger experience, strengthen the country’s tourism infrastructure, and position Juan Santamaría International Airport as a more comprehensive travel hub that reflects Costa Rica’s growing importance as one of the leading tourism destinations in the Americas.
