Meliá Hotels International, among the 10 most sustainable hotel chains in the world

According to the prestigious CUHK Business School in Hong Kong, which compiles the Greater China Hotel Business Sustainability Index (HBSI)

Meliá Hotels International, a leading hotel company in Spain and one of the fastest growing chains in the Asia Pacific area, has been recognized as one of the 10 best performing hotels in sustainability, according to the prestigious The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s (CUHK) Business School.

For the second consecutive year, this business school has drawn up the Greater China Hotel Business Sustainability Index (HBSI), an evaluation of hotel companies that seeks to value the best business practices in the field of economic, social and environmental sustainability.

In this second edition, a total of 29 entities have been evaluated, including 20 hotel companies listed in China and nine international chains. All the data used in the evaluation is based on publicly available information and uses an analysis model developed by the business school itself, which measures three fundamental aspects: company values in the field of sustainability, processes and management model of sustainability and, finally, the impact on seven interest groups: customers, employees, communities, public administrations, investors, suppliers and the environment.

For Meliá, this recognition is proof of the level of maturity reached by the company in China, where it landed 13 years ago with the opening of its first hotel in Shanghai. Meliá today has a portfolio of 6 establishments distributed in the cities of Shanghai, Xian, Jinan, Zhengzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing, in addition to another 5 in the process of opening.

In this period, in which China has become a strategic focus for Meliá, the company has not only consolidated its portfolio, but also its commercial and distribution strategy with the main players in the country, which has been key to improving the brand recognition and appeal to the growing domestic travel market. According to Bernardo Cabot, Managing Director of Meliá Hotels International in China, “it is a great pride that a Spanish company is recognized in a world power like China for its good practices and commitments in the field of sustainability, which always stimulates us to continue getting better. We are very pleased that this effort is being valued by such a prestigious business school and we are sure that it will be key to continue growing in this country”.
