The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that the employed population in the tourism sector in Mexico amounted to 4 million 604 thousand people employed in the fourth quarter of 2022.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) indicated that in the period October-December 2022, tourism employment represented 8.8% of national employment.
He highlighted that the recovery in tourism employment continues, showing, from October to December 2022, a growth of 1.1%, equivalent to 51 thousand 659 more employed people, compared to the 4 million 552 thousand people of the previous quarter.
Torruco Marqués pointed out that in his annual comparison, an increase of 339 thousand 635 people was observed employed in the sector that produces tourism goods and services, equivalent to a growth of 8% compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.
He stressed that tourism employment in the fourth quarter of 2022 exceeded by 2.6%, that is, 116,406 people, the historical number of personnel employed in the tourism sector in the first quarter of 2020, prior to the pandemic, when there were 4 million 487 thousand people employed.
The calculation of Tourism Employment to the fourth quarter of 2022, was made based on the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (New edition) (ENOEN) of INEGI and the methodology approved by the Specialized Technical Committee of Economic Statistics of the Tourism Sector (CTEEEST) , made up of INEGI, the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS), the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and Sectur.
By emphasizing the growth of tourism employment in Mexico, the head of Sectur highlighted the importance of micro, small and medium-sized companies, which together with large companies are generators of formal jobs, which in turn contribute to generating economic benefits in destinations, and in this way comply with the premise of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, of making tourism a tool for social reconciliation.
