An official from the Undersecretary of Tourism and the Southern Cone Ports Corporation agreed to work together on an agenda to promote the development of the industry, they also projected 380 landfalls in the 2022-2023 period
The Undersecretary of Tourism, Verónica Kunze, led a meeting with representatives of the Southern Cone Ports Corporation, where the main challenges of the cruise industry were addressed and where the next season was also planned.
At the meeting, which was held at the Undersecretary of Tourism in Santiago, it was detailed that the schedule for the 2022-2023 cruise season, which will begin in September and end in April, contemplates the arrival of 380 ships with more than 375 thousand passengers in different ports of Chile.
“We promised to work on different issues, one of them is to generate a roadmap that allows us to plan the development and progress that the ports can have in relation to this activity during the next four years. We also talked about planning for the next cruise season, health issues and controls that will take place during this season. We agreed to work on it to anticipate requirements and have a good coordination in this regard, “said Verónica Kunze, Undersecretary of Tourism.
In the instance, where the board of the Corporation of Ports of the Southern Cone participated, headed by its president, Rodrigo Pommiez; its vice president, Juan Marcos Mancilla; and directors Fernando Gajardo; and Enrique Runin, the entity requested the support of the undersecretary to carry out a common strategy for participation in Seatrade Cruise Global 2023, the largest cruise fair in the world, which will be held between May 1 and 4 next year in Miami, United States.
The main challenges in terms of port infrastructure were also analyzed to meet the demand of this sector during the coming years, in order to generate a cruise development plan, which allows planning alternatives and ongoing port projects for the development of cruise ships. this industry in the future.
The president of the Southern Cone Ports Corporation and general manager of the Austral Port Company, Rodrigo Pommiez, stated that “this meeting begins our work agenda together with the Tourism authorities. We analyze issues of great importance for the cruise industry, such as the planning of the next season in Chile, the definition of uniform health criteria for the care of passengers and crew, as well as the need to generate a port development plan that responds to the industry needs”.
