BELIZE CITY, BELIZE — October 2026. Belize is preparing to strengthen its position as a premier Caribbean and Central American destination with the announcement of a new seasonal air service connecting Frankfurt, Germany, and Belize City, beginning December 16, 2027.
Operated by Discover Airlines, part of the Lufthansa Group, the new connection will provide travelers from Germany and other European markets with greater access to Belize’s extraordinary natural beauty, cultural diversity, and authentic travel experiences.
According to the Belize Tourism Board (BTB), flights will operate twice weekly through mid-April 2028, coinciding with the country’s popular dry season. The new route represents an important milestone in Belize’s strategy to diversify international visitor markets and expand its global tourism connectivity.
A Strategic Gateway Between Europe and Belize
The introduction of the Frankfurt–Belize City route is expected to create significant opportunities for European tour operators, travel agencies, destination management companies, and tourism stakeholders.
Frankfurt, one of Europe’s major international aviation hubs, offers extensive connections throughout Germany and other European countries, making Belize more accessible to travelers seeking tropical escapes, adventure tourism, cultural experiences, and sustainable travel.
Hon. Anthony Mahler, Belize’s Minister of Tourism, Youth, Sports and Diaspora Relations, emphasized the strategic importance of the new service in strengthening Belize’s presence in the European tourism market.
The initiative supports the country’s efforts to attract international visitors while showcasing its world-renowned Belize Barrier Reef, pristine Caribbean islands, ancient Maya archaeological sites, tropical rainforests, and vibrant multicultural heritage.
Discover Belize’s Unique Christmas Traditions
With the inaugural flight scheduled for December 16, 2027, European travelers will have the opportunity to experience Belize during one of its most culturally vibrant seasons.
Christmas in Belize is much more than a holiday celebration. It reflects the country’s remarkable cultural diversity, combining Maya, Garifuna, Creole, Mestizo, and European influences.
Among the most distinctive traditions are:
Las Posadas: Celebrated primarily in northern and western Belize, this nine-night religious tradition reenacts Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter before the birth of Jesus. Communities gather for processions, prayers, music, and traditional foods.
The Maya Deer Dance: A colorful ceremonial performance featuring traditional costumes, marimba music, and storytelling that preserves important elements of Maya cultural heritage.
Wanaragua (Jankunu): A vibrant Garifuna Christmas tradition featuring elaborate masks, colorful costumes, energetic drumming, and theatrical performances reflecting historical and cultural es.

Krismos Bram and Sambai: A traditional Creole celebration recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, featuring drumming, call-and-response singing, dancing, and community gatherings, particularly in Gales Point Manatee
.

Grand Ball: A New Year’s celebration that preserves elegant ballroom traditions, including the waltz, polka, quadrille, and other classical dances in communities such as Dangriga and Hopkins.
Together, these celebrations offer European visitors an opportunity to discover Belize beyond its beaches and explore the country’s living cultural heritage.
Beyond Christmas: Festivals and Adventures Through April 2028
The seasonal air connection will also allow international visitors to participate in some of Belize’s most anticipated annual cultural and sporting events.
Placencia Sidewalk Festival
This colorful celebration brings together local artists, craftspeople, musicians, and food vendors along Placencia’s famous sidewalk. Visitors can discover original paintings, handmade jewelry, ceramics, woodwork, and authentic Belizean craftsmanship.
San Pedro Carnaval
Celebrated on Ambergris Caye, San Pedro Carnaval combines colorful street festivities, traditional dances, theatrical performances, and playful cultural expressions rooted in Mestizo heritage.

La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge
Held annually in March, this four-day canoe race follows historic river routes across Belize. The competition attracts local and international participants while highlighting the country’s waterways, communities, and sporting traditions.
Baron Bliss Harbour Regatta
One of Belize’s traditional sailing competitions, the regatta brings together sailing enthusiasts and clubs from coastal communities to celebrate the country’s maritime heritage.
These events provide excellent opportunities for tour operators to develop specialized travel programs combining culture, adventure, community tourism, and authentic destination experiences.
From Rainforest to Reef: A Destination of Extraordinary Diversity
Belize offers a remarkable combination of experiences within a relatively compact destination.
Visitors can explore ancient Maya cities, discover tropical wildlife, experience the traditions of local communities, or enjoy world-class diving and snorkeling along the Belize Barrier Reef.
Popular destinations include Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Placencia, San Ignacio, and the country’s spectacular marine reserves.
For European travelers seeking nature, adventure, wellness, romance, or cultural immersion, Belize offers an attractive alternative to more traditional winter holiday destinations.
The new air service also presents an opportunity for the development of multi-destination itineraries throughout Central America.
New Opportunities for the International Travel Trade
The arrival of Discover Airlines creates promising opportunities for European travel agencies, tour operators, wholesalers, and destination management companies interested in expanding their Central American product portfolios.
Improved air connectivity can encourage the development of new tourism packages, educational familiarization trips, specialized itineraries, and strategic partnerships between European and Belizean tourism businesses.
